When we tried these caramelized onions, the first thing we thought was, "Why hasn't anyone done this before?" The sweetness of the Tropea Red Onion (the real one, crunchy and delicate) marries with the character of Lake Garda red wine , creating a sweet and sour balance that works with practically everything.
We use them mostly with aged cheeses—like a good Grana Padano or a blue cheese—but also on crostini, with grilled meats, or to give personality to a gourmet burger. Once, we put them on a white pizza with gorgonzola. That pizza lasted a very short time.
What do we really like? It's a well-made artisanal product, without shortcuts. Organic cane sugar, select Garda red wine, and perfectly ripe Tropea onions. You can taste the difference.
It's one of those products you keep in the pantry and pull out when you want to make a good impression without too much effort. It always works.
