Lake Garda is one of Italy's most precious winemaking gems. Nestled between Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino, this area enjoys a unique microclimate that creates ideal conditions for producing exceptionally high-quality wines .
The mass of water of the lake mitigates the temperatures, the constant breezes (Ora and Pelèr) ventilate the vineyards, and the morainic soils on the Brescia shore, varied on the Verona shore, rocky and terraced in the Alto Garda Trentino give each wine a unique and recognisable personality.
Some of Northern Italy's finest wines are produced here: fresh, minerally whites, elegant rosés, and drinkable reds that reflect the sun, water, and tradition of this extraordinary land. Rows of vines trace the hills like impressionist brushstrokes, and the diverse terrain allows for the cultivation of native and international varieties that satisfy every palate.
We at FeelGarda have tasted, studied, and loved these wines. In this guide, we'll tell you about our favorites—the ones we truly recommend, not by hearsay, but because we've experienced them, glass in hand.
Let's start with the undisputed king: Lugana DOC . This white wine is produced between Lombardy and Veneto, on the southern shore of the lake, in the Sirmione area and its surroundings, from Turbiana grapes (or Trebbiano di Lugana, if you prefer the official name). Fresh, elegant, mineral, with floral and citrus notes that evoke the scent of the lake and the sun.
Lugana di Sirmione has become an icon: you'll find it on the tables of Michelin-starred restaurants and in village trattorias alike. We drink it with lake fish, with creamy risottos, but also on its own, on the terrace, while pretending to work. It's the wine that makes you fall in love with Garda at first sip.
On the Veronese shore, we find Bardolino DOC , a light and drinkable red that becomes our best friend in the summer. Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara: a blend that smells of cherry, almond, and lake breeze.
And then there's Chiaretto di Bardolino , the rosé that has made half of Europe fall in love (including us first). Delicate, fruity, perfect with appetizers or simply to accompany the sunset over Lake Garda. It's not just any rosé: it's *the* rosé of the lake, and you can taste it—or rather, you can drink it.
Not far from Lake Garda, in the Valpolicella hills, one of the world's most famous Italian wines is produced: Amarone della Valpolicella . Powerful, complex, and enveloping, it is made from dried grapes that lend concentration, structure, and notes of ripe fruit, spice, and chocolate.
It's not exactly a "lake" wine, but it's so close (and so good) that it would be a shame not to mention it. We recommend it with braised meats, aged cheeses, or simply to celebrate a special occasion. It's the perfect Sunday wine, the one that makes you feel at home even if you're far away.
Let's move to the Brescia side of the river, where Rosé Valtènesi (or Chiaretto di Valtènesi, if you prefer) is born. More structured than its Veronese cousin, with a bold but never overbearing character, this rosé is one of our weaknesses.
Groppello, Marzemino, Barbera, Sangiovese : a blend of Lake Garda wines with aromas of red fruits, aromatic herbs, and stone. Perfect with local cured meats, fresh cheeses, or simply to toast a day well spent on the lakeshore.
Little-known but worthy of attention: Custoza DOC . This white wine is made in the area between Verona and Lake Garda, from a blend of local grapes (Garganega, Trebbiano, Friulano) that provide freshness, smoothness, and a disarming drinkability.
It's the summer wine, the one you drink without thinking too much about yet that surprises you with every sip. Floral, fruity, with a light almond note. We recommend it with fish appetizers, salads, or as an aperitif by the lake.
The secret? The microclimate. The lake moderates the temperatures, the breezes (Ora and Pelèr, for friends) ventilate the vineyards, and the soils—clay, limestone, morainic—give complexity and character. Each bottle is a piece of Garda: sun, water, stone, tradition.
At FeelGarda, we only select wines we've personally tried, from producers we know and respect. No random labels, no passing fads. Just real wine, to drink and talk about.
If you love fresh, mineral white wines: Lugana DOC di Sirmione, without a doubt.
