Malcesine: Complete Guide to the Cable Car

Malcesine: Guida Completa per la Cabinovia

If there's one thing you quickly learn when visiting Lake Garda, it's that its beauty changes completely depending on the vantage point. Seen from the shores, it's romantic and relaxing, but when you go high up, the perspective transforms into something simply spectacular. And the absolute best way to experience this "wonder effect" is to take a ride on the cable car that goes straight from Malcesine to the top of Monte Baldo.

Imagine going, in just over fifteen minutes, from the stone alleys of a medieval village perched on the water to alpine pastures at almost 1,800 meters of altitude, where the air becomes crisp and the panorama embraces the entire lake.

The unique feature: an ascent that rotates on itself

The journey itself is already half the experience. The cable car is divided into two sections, but it's the second part that truly takes your breath away. AS it ascends towards the peak, the cabin slowly begins to rotate 360 degrees.

It's a brilliant detail: it doesn't matter where you are or if you managed to snag a spot near the glass, because during the ascent the view will rotate with you. You'll first see the rocky mountain walls, then the green meadows, and finally, all of a sudden, the immense blue expanse of Lake Garda stretching as far as the eye can see beneath your feet.

What awaits you once you reach the top?

Upon arriving at the Tratto Spino station on Monte Baldo, the feeling is one of having landed in another world. This mountain is nicknamed the "Botanical Garden of Europe" for the incredible variety of rare plants and flowers that grow there, and it's the perfect starting point for any type of day you have in mind:

  • If you just want to relax: A few steps from the cable car's arrival point, you'll find easy, flat paths, perfect for a stroll, breathing fresh air, and taking postcard-worthy photos towards Riva del Garda and Torbole. You can spread a blanket on the grass or settle onto a refuge terrace to enjoy a typical lunch in the sun.

  • If you love adventure: From here, an endless network of more challenging treks runs along the mountain ridges. Furthermore, Monte Baldo is an international mecca for paragliding (you'll constantly see colorful gliders plummeting into the void) and for downhill biking enthusiasts, who take the cable car up with their bikes and then hurtle down the descent trails.

Small tricks to enjoy your visit stress-free

To prevent a beautiful day from turning into an endless wait, there are a couple of precautions that make all the difference:

  1. Avoid the ticket office queue: During the summer high season, the queue on the ground in Malcesine can get really long. The heartfelt advice is to purchase tickets online in advance, to skip the entrance queue.

  2. Pay attention to the weather and clothing: Even if it's 30 degrees at lake level and people are in swimwear, up there at 1,760 meters the temperature drops considerably and it's easy to find wind. Always pack a sweatshirt or light jacket in your backpack. Before leaving home, also check the live webcams to make sure the summit isn't covered by clouds.

  3. How to get there without going crazy looking for parking: Malcesine is beautiful but parking lots fill up quickly. An excellent (and much more scenic) alternative is to arrive in Malcesine by boat from other lake towns like Riva, Limone, or Bardolino. Once disembarked at the small port, the cable car station can be reached with a pleasant ten-minute walk through the historic center.

Ultimately, the ascent to Monte Baldo isn't just a tourist attraction: it's the perfect way to truly understand how unique the Garda landscape is, where the Mediterranean atmosphere meets the majesty of the Alps.
