Guide to Lake Garda's Weekly Markets: Authentic Flavors Not to Be Missed

There's a type of tourist who comes to Garda, goes to the supermarket, buys the same things they buy at home, and then returns convinced they've experienced Italy. And then there are those who find the Wednesday market in Bardolino, stop at a local cheese stall, taste something without quite knowing what it is, and can't bring themselves to leave.

We at FeelGarda definitely belong to the second category. And this guide is for you.

Why Garda markets are different

The weekly markets around Lake Garda are not tourist markets. They are real markets, frequented by locals, where you buy what you need for the week — fruit, vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, bread, spices, clothes, kitchen utensils. Tourists who stumble upon them are welcome, but they are not the main focus. And this, paradoxically, makes them much more interesting.

Among the stalls, you'll find local producers bringing their oil, their honey, their preserves. You'll find grandmothers selling herbs picked that morning. You'll find mountain cheeses that don't have a website, an Instagram, or national distribution. They only exist there, at that moment, on that counter.

Must-visit markets: days and locations

Bardolino — Wednesday morning

One of the largest and most vibrant markets on the Veronese shore. It takes place along the lakeside promenade and in the town center streets. Excellent selection of local products: oil, wine, cheeses, cured meats, seasonal fruit and vegetables. Arrive early — by 9 AM — to find producers with their stocks still intact.

Garda — Friday morning

The Friday market in Garda is more compact but very well-curated. Spectacular lakeside location, with views of the Rocca promontory. Ideal for those seeking typical products in a quieter setting compared to larger markets.

Lazise — Tuesday morning

Lazise is one of the best-preserved medieval villages on the lake, and its Tuesday market takes place right in the shadow of the ancient walls. Authentic atmosphere, local producers, and the chance to take a walk in the historic center before or after shopping.

Desenzano del Garda — Tuesday morning

The largest market on the Brescia side. Significant size, very varied offerings. Less intimate than the others, but unmissable for those seeking quantity and variety. Excellent for stocking up on products to take home.

Peschiera del Garda — Monday morning

A lively market at the southern entrance of the lake, convenient for those arriving from the motorway. Good selection of local products and competitive prices.

Riva del Garda — Wednesday morning

On the Trentino side, Riva's market is more oriented towards mountain products: alpine cheeses, speck, mountain honey, alpine herbs. A complementary offering compared to the markets on the Veronese shore.

What to buy: our list

Years of market visits have taught us what to look for. Here are the products we never leave on the counter:

  • Garda PDO extra virgin olive oil: look for local producers with bottles without elaborate labels. Often the best.
  • Bulk wine: some producers bring wine in demijohns. Bardolino, Custoza, Lugana — always ask to taste first.
  • Mountain cheeses: Monte Veronese, young Grana Padano, local goat cheeses. Ask about the aging.
  • Garda honey: wildflower, acacia, chestnut. Each beekeeper has their own character.
  • Seasonal fruit and vegetables: in summer, peaches, apricots, and oxheart tomatoes that are unlike anything you find at the supermarket.
  • Herbs: rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano — often sold fresh, picked that same morning.

Some practical tips

Bring a canvas bag — plastic bags are becoming less available. Bring cash — not all stallholders accept cards. Arrive by 9:30 AM for the best selection, and don't wait until noon to buy the cheese that caught your eye: it might be gone.

And most importantly: taste. Ask. Talk to the vendors. Even with your uncertain Italian and their non-existent German, you'll always find a way to understand each other. Food is a universal language — and they speak it particularly well in Garda.

For everything else, we're here

Markets are wonderful, but they last a few hours and then they're gone. To bring the flavors of Garda home all year round — PDO oil, honey, preserves, wines — we at FeelGarda have made the selection for you. Products chosen with the same care we would use to choose something at Bardolino's Wednesday market. Because, in the end, that's exactly what we do.
