There's a place on Lake Garda where summer takes on a different form. Not beaches, not aperitifs, not water parks. An open-air amphitheater, nestled between cypress trees and statues, overlooking the lake, with music rising into the warm evening air and stars acting as a ceiling. It's called the Vittoriale degli Italiani, and in summer, it becomes one of Italy's most extraordinary places.
We at FeelGarda go there every year. And every year we leave thinking we should have brought more people with us.
What is the Vittoriale degli Italiani
The Vittoriale is the residence that Gabriele d'Annunzio — poet, soldier, visionary, talented megalomaniac — had built in Gardone Riviera between 1921 and his death in 1938. It is not a villa. It is a world unto itself: a complex of buildings, gardens, monuments, a warship embedded in the hill, a mausoleum, an amphitheater.
D'Annunzio called it "a gift I make to the Homeland." The Homeland accepted it, and today the Vittoriale is one of Italy's most visited museums — and in summer, thanks to its amphitheater, one of the country's most evocative stages.
The 2026 Summer Program
The Vittoriale's summer season is one of its richest in recent years. The amphitheater — which seats up to three thousand spectators — hosts concerts, theatrical performances, dance shows, and special evenings from June to September.
Classical and Opera Concerts
The Vittoriale's operatic tradition is well established. Every summer, some of the most important voices in Italian and international opera perform in the amphitheater. The setting — the lake in the background, the cypress trees, the D'Annunzian architecture — transforms every concert into an experience that goes beyond music.
Tener-a-mente Festival
The Vittoriale's contemporary music festival brings international artists every year. Rock, jazz, world music, electronic — a deliberately diverse program, designed for a curious and open audience. Some of the most memorable evenings in recent years have originated here.
Theater Shows and Performances
The Vittoriale's open-air theater also hosts quality theatrical productions, often linked to the figure of d'Annunzio or Italian literary tradition. A different way to experience the place — not just as a museum, but as a living space.

Prices: Vary depending on the event, generally between 25 and 60 euros for major concerts.
Tip: Arrive at least an hour early to visit the gardens and amphitheater in the sunset light. It's an integral part of the experience.
Before or After the Concert: What to Do in Gardone Riviera
Gardone Riviera is one of the most elegant villages on the Brescia side of the lake. The lakeside promenade is dotted with Art Nouveau villas, botanical gardens, and restaurants that make lake cuisine their raison d'être. The André Héller Botanical Garden, a short walk from the Vittoriale, is one of Italy's most beautiful gardens — open until sunset in summer.
For dinner, look for restaurants in the inner streets — less touristy, more authentic, with a selection of local wines that would make many city wine bars envious.
An Evening at the Vittoriale: How We Experience It
We arrive in the afternoon, visit the gardens when the light is still warm, stop in front of the bow of the ship Puglia embedded in the hill — each time we wonder how they managed to put it there, each time we don't find a satisfactory answer. We have dinner in town. We return for the concert when it's dark, with the lake sparkling in the distance and the air smelling of true summer.
It's not just any evening. It's one of those you remember.
